Updated October 2026
Quick answer: Drupal 7 reached end of life on 5 January 2025. It no longer receives official security updates, so every Drupal 7 site is carrying growing risk. Your realistic options are to rebuild in modern Drupal, move to WordPress, rebuild as a custom Laravel application if your site behaves more like software, or buy time with paid extended support while you plan. There’s no simple upgrade button: moving off Drupal 7 is effectively a rebuild whichever platform you choose.
At Itomic we’re Drupal and WordPress specialists, and we build custom applications in Laravel. We’re not tied to any one platform, so we can compare them honestly. This guide explains what Drupal 7’s end of life means for you and how to choose what comes next.
What does Drupal 7 end of life mean?
Since January 2025, the Drupal Security Team no longer publishes fixes for Drupal 7 core or its modules. In practice that means:
- New security holes stay open. Attackers know Drupal 7 sites can’t be patched officially.
- Hosting gets harder. Drupal 7 depends on older PHP versions that hosts are retiring.
- Skills are getting scarce. Fewer developers work with Drupal 7 each year, which pushes up the cost of support.
- Compliance risk. Government and larger organisations often have to show their systems are supported and patched.
Your site won’t switch off, but the risk grows every month. Read more about end-of-life software and when to upgrade.
Why you can’t just upgrade Drupal 7
Drupal 8 was a complete rewrite. Moving from Drupal 7 to any later version (Drupal 10 or 11) isn’t an upgrade; it’s a rebuild, with your content migrated across. The good news is that AI-assisted migration has made replatforming far more affordable than it was a few years ago, and since you’re rebuilding anyway, it’s the right moment to ask whether Drupal is still the best fit.
Your four options
1. Rebuild in modern Drupal
Modern Drupal is powerful, secure and well suited to large, complex, content-rich websites, particularly in government, education and enterprise. Newer versions also upgrade far more smoothly from one major version to the next than Drupal 7 ever did.
2. Move to WordPress
WordPress is the world’s most popular CMS. It’s generally quicker and more economical to build and support, easier for editors, and has a huge range of plugins and developers. For most brochure, marketing and content websites, it’s the best-value choice.
3. Rebuild as a custom Laravel application
Some Drupal 7 sites have grown into something closer to software: portals, member systems, complex workflows and databases. For these, a custom application built in Laravel can be cleaner, faster and easier to maintain than bending a CMS to fit. See when a CMS is a bad idea for a website project.
4. Buy time with extended support
Some companies sell paid, unofficial security support for Drupal 7. It can be a sensible stopgap while you plan and fund a rebuild, but it’s a cost with no long-term value. Treat it as a bridge, not a destination.
Drupal or WordPress? Ten factors to weigh up
| Factor | Leans Drupal | Leans WordPress |
|---|---|---|
| Budget (build and ongoing) | Larger budgets | Tighter budgets |
| User roles and permissions | Complex, fine-grained permissions | Simple editor and admin roles |
| Content structure | Many content types and relationships | Pages, posts and a few custom types |
| Your team’s familiarity | Long-time Drupal editors | New editors or WordPress experience |
| Custom functionality | Heavily customised features | Standard features and plugins |
| Integrations | Complex enterprise integrations | Common third-party tools |
| Scale | Very large sites and traffic | Small to large sites with good hosting |
| Multilingual | Strong built-in support | Handled well with plugins |
| Marketing and SEO tools | Capable, fewer specialists | Huge range of tools and experts |
| Availability of developers | Specialist and smaller pool | Large pool, easier to find help |
On security, both platforms are secure when they’re well built, hosted properly and kept patched. The bigger risk is neglect, whichever you choose. See our guide to WordPress maintenance.
How to plan your move off Drupal 7
- Audit what you have: content types, how much content, integrations, custom modules, and who uses the admin.
- Decide what to keep. A rebuild is a chance to drop old content and features nobody uses.
- Choose the platform using the factors above.
- Protect your search rankings by mapping old URLs to new ones and setting up redirects.
- Plan ongoing maintenance so the new site doesn’t end up in the same position in a few years.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to keep running Drupal 7?
It gets less safe every month. Without official security updates, any new vulnerability stays open unless you pay for extended support.
Can Drupal 7 content be migrated automatically?
Much of it can, to either Drupal or WordPress, using migration tools. Complex content structures and custom modules usually need some hands-on work.
How long does a Drupal 7 rebuild take?
It depends on size and complexity. Small sites usually take six to ten weeks; large, integrated sites can take several months.
