Which Domain Name is right for my organisation? This is a question often asked of Itomic.
The more seasoned people become at using the Internet, the more they are likely to try and find the website they are looking for by going straight to the Address field of their browser and taking an intuitive stab at what the domain name may be. For example, someone that has heard of Itomic, would expect and hope to find a website at www.itomic.com.
Similarly, those who know that Itomic is based in Australia may expect to find a website at www.itomic.com.au. Of course, sometimes the domain name most relevant to your organisation, company or product may already be in use, and in such cases one needs to choose another name with as much relevance as possible.
The bigger your company gets, the more important it becomes to protect your brand name(s) online by registering the appropriate domain names (even if you choose not to use them directly as website addresses). In some cases, the product (or service) you sell may be more recognisable than your company name, and so having a domain name based on the product name makes perfect sense. Also, you may see your company expanding into overseas markets, and in such cases it's often beneficial to own the relevant country-level versions of your domain name.
Also worth considering when selecting a Domain Name is how "search engine friendly" you want it to be. Search Engines like Google favour domain names that include search phrase keywords within them. For example, if one was to have a website about Yellow Umbrellas, and choose a domain name of www.yellow-umbrellas.com the chances of the website being found on a search for "yellow umbrellas" would be very high.
